What If the Life You’re Living Isn’t Actually the Life You Chose?

What If the Life You’re Living Isn’t Actually the Life You Chose?

Did You Choose This?

Have you ever stopped to wonder: Why do I believe this?

Not whether the belief is right or wrong. Not whether you should change it. Just- where did it come from?

So much of what shapes our lives was learned long before we were consciously choosing it. Our expectations around money, relationships, success, our bodies, and even who we think we're supposed to be can come from family, culture, religion, past experiences, and the environments we grew up in.

And sometimes, we don't realize we're still following those old instructions.

Are you living on default?

In my conversation with therapist and psilocybin educator Charity Mills, we explored how our thoughts influence the way we interpret what's happening around us.

One of my favorite examples from our conversation was incredibly simple:

Two people can look at the same book from opposite sides.

One sees the front.
The other sees the back.

Neither person is necessarily wrong- they're describing what they can see from where they're standing.

Our lives can work the same way.

The perspective we've learned becomes the lens through which we interpret what happens next.

And that creates an interesting question:

What changes when we become willing to look from another angle?

We talk about inherited beliefs, expectations in relationships, the inner critic, living on default, changing generational patterns, psilocybin and perspective, and learning to recognize the difference between what happened and the story we created around it.

Try this yourself

You don't have to completely reinvent your life.

Start with one belief.

The next time you notice yourself thinking:

That's just how life works.
I'm supposed to…
I can't because…
People like me always…

Stop for a moment and ask: Where did I learn that?

Then ask one more question: Do I still choose it?

You don't have to immediately know the answer.

The point is to get curious.

Because sometimes the first step toward choosing something different is simply realizing you have a choice.
